The research found that 60% of respondents would generally downplay their own abilities but would answer more favourably to specific questions, such as their ability to order a cup of coffee in a Gaeltacht area.Barry suggests that those who claim to have low Irish self-efficacy have generally experienced a ‘lethal combination’ of experiencing poor performances and a lack of feedback during school.Barry explains that the Official Languages Act of 2003, which requires public bodies within the Irish state to provide services through both Irish and English, served as the inspiration behind the study.“A recent official report where sixteen Government departments were surveyed, of which there are over 21,000 employees, revealed that only 2.62% of staff are recognised as having a competence in the Irish language – or in other words, capable of interacting with the public through Irish when required.“The most important implication emerging from my research is that these misaligned self-efficacy beliefs are a more accurate predictor of performance than actual ability when it comes to the Irish language.“There appears to be a much larger number of civil servants, and generally the wider population, that are completely misrepresenting their Irish knowledge by declaring themselves as non-speakers of Irish. This results in a general withdrawal from using the language with a belief that the Irish language is ‘gone forever’ or ‘forgotten’.“This research is unique in that it is the first study to investigate Irish language self-efficacy beliefs, or perceptions, in current civil servants. What is striking is how those that have studied Irish in school, even to a high standard, are so quick to declare themselves as non-speakers, despite contrary evidence.“The findings in this research suggest that the Irish population possesses a knowledge of Irish language that is often unacknowledged or dismissed due to negative experiences from our school days.“What may be needed, not just for the population in general, but for the civil service in performing its obligations under the Official Languages Act, is a form of refresher training to unlock this knowledge and build people’s self-efficacy beliefs in their Irish language abilities.“By doing this, we may finally change our emotive relationship with the Irish language to a more positive one, where hearing our native language on the street or in shops could become less of a surprise to us.”Shane Barry is a departmental assistant and current PhD student in Applied Linguistics in the Department of English Language and Literature at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Whitey Bulger, notorious Boston mob boss, dies in prison

first_imgBureau of Prisons/Getty Images(BRUCETON MILLS, W.Va,) — James “Whitey” Bulger, the notorious Boston mob boss, died Tuesday after being found unresponsive at a West Virginia federal prison, authorities said.Life-saving measures were initiated on Bulger, 89, after he was found at 8:20 a.m. at the Hazelton federal prison in Bruceton Mills.There was no immediate word on the cause of death, but a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice noted that “no staff or other inmates were injured, and at no time was the public in danger.”Bulger died a day after he was transferred to the Hazelton prison. Up until recently, he had been serving his life sentence at a federal prison in Sumterville, Florida.Bulger was convicted in 2013 of murdering 11 people, as well as extortion, money laundering and weapons charges.The trial came nearly 20 years after he went on the run after being tipped off to a pending federal indictment by a corrupt FBI agent.He spent 16 years on the lam and was arrested in 2011 in Santa Monica, California.Bulger was second only to Osama Bin Laden on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. EXCLUSIVE: Sister Sparrow Bassist, Josh Myers, Talks New Side Project And Gives Dirty Birds Update

first_imgBassist, Josh Myers, best known for being in Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, is currently working on his revived side project, Big Words. With two upcoming dates in July and potential for more in the fall, Live For Live Music chatted with Myers to find out more about what’s going on with Sister Sparrow and to learn more about what he’s been up to recently.L4LM: Take us through your younger years. What were some of your influences? Who inspired you and how did you find your way into the music industry?Josh Myers: I started playing music when I was about 6. I grew up outside of Boston and got into classical piano for a number of years. I never really got good at that. Right around the beginning of high school, I switched piano teachers. My new teacher was a jazz pianist. Instead of just teaching the mechanics of the piano, he was teaching the mechanics of music. That’s where I started to get really into music.Around 16 or so, I really got into the guitar and it came very naturally to me. Then, I switched to bass about a year later, just as a hobby. This is the same story that every bass player has. There were way too many guitarists in my group of friends. I picked it up for the first time at a friend’s house, who happened to have one, and we played Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” for like six hours with one groove. When I got really into the electric bass, I went through all of my favorite music just playing along to it. It gave me a chance to learn different styles by different people.By the time I got to college age, I was thinking I was going to be a jazz musician. I still play a little bit of jazz, but it’s been taken over more by the stuff I loved in high school, which was The Meters, Soundgarden, Tool. It swings back and forth, whether it’s the ’70’s funk, soul, and groove stuff that really moves me or that really heavy grunge that I just loved and would listen to in high school in my room on loop.L4LM: What is currently happening with Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds? Can you bring fans up to speed on what they can expect next? JM: The guitarist, Sasha Brown, left and began doing his own thing. Unrelated to that, Arleigh Kincheloe became pregnant. There was a long period of time when people were asking us what was going on with the band. We weren’t touring. The main thing that we did was tour. We would occasionally take a break to record. We were never the kind of band that put anything in front of touring, so it was a huge change for us. Post baby, we still have plans to be a band. We are all still in the fold. That’s what we’re all thinking.After Sasha’s departure show in New York, we had about ten shows after that. It was mainly Northeast stuff, and we played some New Year’s shows. We played Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, which was amazing. We opened for Galactic at Playstation Theater in Times Square. Then we went on Blues Cruise in January and had four sets on that boat. After the fourth one, we were all looking around like, “Okay, that was it. We’re on break now.” It was a really strange feeling.Break has been really good, actually. I’ve reconnected with the writing side of myself, and the freelancer side. I’ve had a ton of different gigs, going to different places, doing stuff I haven’t done in the last four years because I’ve been full time on the road. It’s been great.L4LM: This brings us up to your revived project, Big Words. Tell us more about that.JM: After the band realized that we were going to have some time off, I started doing a lot of soul-searching. I did some iTunes library searching and found this music that I had written and recorded back in 2009. The band, Big Words, was completely different. We actually had the drummer from the original line-up of Sister Sparrow, Bram Kincheloe. Basically, I just forgot about it. I remember when I stopped doing it, I made a conscious effort to tell myself that I had been leading and starting bands for my entire career. If I didn’t stop that, I would become one of those people that are control freaks.I wanted to branch out and see what other bandleaders’ styles were. I also wanted to check out my own bass playing and give it a real chance when I wasn’t the one calling all the shots. Fast forward eight years, I’m listening to this music and thinking, “Oh man! I like this stuff. It’s so good.” I totally forgot about all of it.  While listening to a few of the songs I was thinking, “I wrote that?”I reached out to a few people that I’ve been wanting to play with, and they all said, “yes.” They are all great guys and amazing players. The goal now is to put this music in their hands and let it breathe. There’s a lot of room for stretching out, and we plan to do a lot of the ‘anything can happen’ attitude with the music. Hopefully, everything will happen.L4LM: You have a few shows slated for July with possibly more in the fall. Is that the plan?JM: That is the plan. We’re working on some more dates in September right now. We’re going to look at more in October. I’m hoping to do a couple weekends every month once we get going, and hopefully, record in the winter.I have a lot going on. Basically, I’m home a lot of the time. I’m still on the road quite a bit, but it’s more of little quick runs on weekends. Being home, I’ve had a chance to really spend a lot of time working on music production, mixing, writing stuff of my own, and working with other writers. You have a lot less time to think when you’re sitting in a van.L4LM: Do you have anything going on during festival season? Are there any projects or collaborations you are working on throughout the summer?JM: As of now, I have one thing booked with a band called The Mammals. They’re up in Woodstock, New York. They put on a festival called The Hoot, which is at the end of August. That’s what I’ve got for festival stuff right now. Next summer, I would love to hit festivals with Big Words in between Dirty Birds dates.The line-up for Big Words for their upcoming shows on July 14th and 15th will consist of Myers on bass, Danny Mayer of The Eric Krasno Band on guitar, Chris Bullock of Snarky Puppy on sax, and Bill Carbone of Max Creek on drums. AP7 should abandon active management – National Audit Office

first_imgIt said fund AP7 participants were “vulnerable” due to a lack of external controls and supervision, and called on the fund to revise its statement of goals and develop a better means of evaluating its index management and leverage strategy.Lastly, the audit office criticised the Swedish government for failing to focus on these aspects in its own reviews of the fund.AP7 said the fund was working continuously to improve, and saw the review as an “incentive”.And while it found some of the auditor’s recommendations as “reasonable and constructive”, it strongly disagreed on many other points.It described the review as “regrettably misleading”, pointing out that its goal was first and foremost to ensure that those participants who do not make an active selection receive an equally robust pension as those who actively select funds in the system.This goal, according to AP7, was not considered at all in the review, which was “surprising”.While conceding that active management was a “difficult” area, it said the buffer fund had worked hard to find an efficient form of management that balanced risk and return.It also claimed that its approach had outperformed more traditional forms of active management.Since AP7 was launched in 2007, it has returned 52%, compared with 20% for the average saver who selects funds available in the system.AP7 also pointed out that it was subject to comprehensive reviews and monitoring by auditors and the government, and maintained that it had always followed the laws and directives to which it was subject.The fund refuted that there were serious deficiencies in its internal supervision and controls, and said it was sceptical of refining its statement of goals, adding that the audit office had provided no indication of what this should look like.  As of the end of 2012, almost 3m Swedes were invested in AP7, which has approximately SEK130bn (€14.6bn) in assets. Sweden’s National Audit Office (Riksrevisionen) has recommended that AP7, the default option in the country’s national defined contribution pension system, end its involvement in active management.In a recently published review of the buffer fund, the Riksrevisionen argued that active management had been of little benefit to the fund’s participants, and that the strategy was ill suited to the shorter investment horizons of those already retired.The review also urged AP7 to continue to develop its internal supervision and controls and strength the independence of these functions, after noting “serious deficiencies” in the area.The Riksrevisionen said savers in AP7 found it difficult to work out what returns they could expect, and pointed out that the fund was not subject to the same regulatory scrutiny as the other funds in the premium pension system.last_img read more

Lloyd A. Shea, 83, Wellington: Dec. 6, 1929 – Feb. 28, 2013

Shea, of Wellington, died Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Sumner County Care Center in Wellington at the age of 83.Lloyd was born the son of Elmer and Faye (Lantis) Shea on December 6, 1929 at his family home near Pomona.He married Naomi Ruth Osborn in April of 1953 on Mac Dill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. They were later separated.He served in the Air Force, loading bombs on planes during the Korean War. After the military, he and his family settled in Wichita for a short time, before returning to Florida. Boeing, which provided a section of the Apollo spacecraft, sent Lloyd to create and lead a quality control program at Cape Canaveral. He was involved with the majority of the Apollo missions. His aptitude for organization, attention to detail, and precision served him well throughout his working years.Survivors include his children Steven Lloyd Shea and Cynthia Lee (Shea) Wiley, both of Oxford, older brother Eugene Victor Shea and his wife Dixie of Hannah, Wyoming, grandchildren Cristy Lynn (Coffey) Newlin of Wellington and Bryson Lloyd Mahurin of Oxford, great-grandchildren Quentin Newlin (son of Cristy) and Aubrey Annah Persinger (daughter of Bryson) and a cousin, Delores (Beightol) Whiteman of Winfield. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Nancy Ellen (Davis) Shea and his younger brother John Frank Shea.A burial will take place at the Oxford Cemetery at a later date.Memorials have been established in his loving memory with Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice 3210 West Kellogg Drive, Wichita. Winning a Deal is the Outcome, Not Something You Do

first_imgIt is sometimes difficult to think of winning a deal as an outcome. It isn’t something that you do; it’s the natural result of everything leading up to your dream client’s decision to buy from you. Much of the time, when we talk about winning deals, we don’t acknowledge the inputs that create the output (a useful concept for thinking about your results, including won deals). So what are the inputs that create the natural output of a won deal? What created a preference to buy from you? Winning a deal is the outcome, not something you do.Outputs that Lead to a DealCertain things tend to be true when you win deals. Very few of them occur late in the sales conversation, and almost none happen when you ask your dream client to sign a contract so you can begin to execute for them. Most of them show up very early in the process and build a preference to work with you.The Belief You Understand ThemAs much as we want people to understand who we are, what we do, and why we do it the way that we do, prospects seem to find more value in making sure we know who they are, what they do, what they want, and why they want it that way. My friend, Charlie Green, wrote a book titled Trust-Based Selling and an accompanying field book, both of which are mandatory reading. Charlie has an equation for trust: Credibility x Reliability x Intimacy / Self-Orientation. He will tell you of all the factors that intimacy is the strongest. It answers the questions, “Do you know me?” and “Do you care?”The time you spend listening and taking notes might be a good indicator as to whether or not you are generating this outcome. Your ability to share that you understand what they need to be able to make something work in their company is also going to help with this output.If your actions show that you are not interested in the people with whom you are meeting or what they want, you can be confident that you are not creating the outcomes you need. When you only talk about you, your company, and your solution, you project that you care more about selling your solution than helping them with the better results they need.The Belief You Are RightThe contacts within your dream client account need to believe that you are right. They need to believe that you are right about the root cause of their problem, the implication of those problems, and your recommendation as to what they need to do about it. They also need to believe that how you are going to solve is not only right but that it is right for them.If you are not right about the root cause of their problem or challenge (or opportunity), you make it challenging to believe your recommendation. In one of my businesses, I have had clients resist the truth about why they were not getting the results they needed, only accepting my analysis (and my recommendations) after they were harmed by ignoring the facts. The framework you find in Eat Their Lunch was organic, growing out of my need to be a better teacher and educator. You win when your dream client believes you are right about their problems and the solution.Your recommendation not only has to be believed as being right, but it also has to pass the test of being right for your dream client. If you aren’t collaborating and building consensus with the stakeholders you want to work with you in the future, you make it difficult for them by not including their input, their preferences, and resolving their concerns.The Belief You Will Execute for ThemNo one wants to buy from someone they believe is not going to execute for them. They don’t want to be embarrassed by a bad decision, and they don’t want you to strand them with a solution that doesn’t work, and one where they are not going to get the necessary support.The output here is the result of you creating the confidence you and your team will execute the solution you sell, that you understand their concerns, and that they can count on you. They need to believe you and your team are going to think they’re important enough to command your time, attention, and help in improving their results.Any doubt about your willingness or ability to execute reduces the likelihood of you winning their business—even if they believe you understand them and believe you are right.Inputs Create OutputsThere are inputs here worth some discussion. How do you create the outputs above?Your ApproachYour overall approach to selling is a factor in creating the outcomes above. If your approach is transactional (a word I am using to describe a set of behaviors, not a type of sale), you won’t likely score well on understanding your dream client. The time you spend trying to leverage your company’s reputation and solutions early prevents you from keeping your understanding of your client.When your approach precludes your effectively diagnosing your dream client’s challenges because you lack the business acumen, situational knowledge, or a general theory as to why they are struggling with some set of problems, you make it challenging to accept your recommendations as being right, let alone right for them.The more consultative your approach, the better your chances of creating the outcomes that build a preference to work with you.Your CommunicationHow you communicate matters as much as what you communicate (you should join Toastmasters, not because you want to a speaker, but because you want to communicate effectively). It helps to be conversational, and it is of extraordinary value to ask outstanding questions and to listen intently. When you are not taking notes, you are communicating that what your dream client says is of no import to you.It’s also incredibly crucial that you know your subject matter cold. You don’t need to sound like you know what you are talking about; you have to know what you are talking about (this is the credibility you see in Charlie Green’s equation above).Your ProcessIf there were a single area I would recommend you to spend time improving, it would be your process, more explicitly selling the process to your dream client. If you want to give yourself the best chance at winning, you want to ensure you have the necessary meetings and conversations that lead to that result. (See The Lost Art of Closing) No more pushy sales tactics. The Lost Art of Closing shows you how to proactively lead your customer and close your sales. The more complex the sale (read as “low-frequency decision” with “high significance” for the client), the more important is that you have time to prove you understand your client, that you are right about the root cause of their problems and the solution, and that you are going to execute. Attempts to shorten the time it takes to do this tends to not only reduce your chances of winning but also slows things down.In every interaction you have with your contacts, you are providing them an experience as to what you and your company are going to be like to work with in the future, should they choose you.You Win Early and Sign LaterYou win deals early in the process. The more you focus on your competency in managing the end-to-end experience of the sales conversation, the better you will do in creating a preference to buy from you.
