first_img RSF_en News RSF calls for a fully transparent investigation after mine kills two journalists in Azerbaijan Robert MénardSecretary-General Russian peacekeepers deny foreign reporters access to Nagorno-Karabakh to go further AzerbaijanEurope – Central Asia Paris, 4 December 2006Dear Mr. President, Reporters Without Borders, an organisation that defends press freedom worldwide, would like to express to you its deep concern about the recent deterioration in press freedom in your country. You said in a recent interview on state television that “no one should doubt freedom of expression and press freedom in Azerbaijan.” Unfortunately, the crackdown on independent journalists and media which began in October and which has taken a dramatic turn since 24 November forces us to question what you said. The newspaper Azadlig was under constant threat of eviction from its premises from October onwards. The threat was carried out on 24 November on the decision of the Baku economic court. Azadlig, the news agency Turan and the newspaper Bizim Yol were evicted and told to move to new premises assigned to them by the government. On arriving at the new premises, they found they were already occupied. The work of these media has been seriously disrupted, especially as part of their equipment and archives were damaged or lost in the move. The National Television and Radio Council announced on 24 November that it was withdrawing the licence of ANS, the leading independent TV station. ANS stopped broadcasting the same day. As the BBC, RFE/RL and Voice of America were retransmitted on ANS’s channels, the withdrawal of the licence meant these radio stations have also been silenced. The independent, opposition and foreign media are being systematically targeted by these repressive measures, which show that the Azeri authorities are taking a harder line on free expression and press freedom despite the appeals from press freedom organisations, and representatives of the European Union, the OSCE and the United States.Mr. President, we call on you to intervene to ensure that the press freedom is respected in Azerbaijan. We would also like to inform of our intention to follow the situation closely and to help Azerbaijan’s independent media. We are particularly conscious of the danger that these restrictions could affect the 2008 presidential election. We trust you will give this matter your careful consideration.Sincerely, June 4, 2021 Find out more December 4, 2006 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Open letter to Ilham Aliev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Receive email alerts Follow the news on Azerbaijan Help by sharing this information News June 8, 2021 Find out more AzerbaijanEurope – Central Asia “We’ll hold Ilham Aliyev personally responsible if anything happens to this blogger in France” RSF says News News Organisation April 9, 2021 Find out morelast_img read more

Everyone who purchases a bulb receives a memory card showing each and every person’s name so they can all be held in the heart of the community. This has become a cherished keepsake from year to year. These cards are delivered locally by the committee but are posted out all over the world.  Bulbs cost €5 each and this year information will be circulated to every household in the parish.  Details will follow soon. The Village Hall Committee are also planning a big celebration for next year.  In 2021, the village celebrates the 75th anniversary of Lady Nancy Dunraven gifting the first public tree in the country to the community of the Village.  A tradition which has stood tall since.Chairman of the Village Hall Committee at Adare Village, Paudie Griffin, said: “We hope the village Christmas tree will bring a new sense of togetherness in the village this Christmas and remind people of our wonderful community and the need to shop local and to keep our village alive.“We have so many wonderful shops, boutiques, pubs, restaurants, cafes and hotels which we all need to support. The tree this year was funded by a ‘ go fund me page’ set up by the committee. This has been very well received with donations coming in from around the globe and we thank everyone for their support.”“The message is loud and clear from Adare Village.  Our tree will stand proudly at the top of the village this year to represent our fight against Covid, to honour the people we have loved and lost and to show solidarity with our frontline workers.  Covid won’t stop this wonderful tradition!  It makes our hope burn brighter.” he added.
