Matt Valaika will go down as one of the finest soccer players the Santa Clarita Valley has produced, a notion supported by Hart High’s decision to make his jersey the first retired by the boys’ soccer team. Valaika shattered the school single-season scoring record with an area-best 41 goals, and he is the Daily News’ Santa Clarita Valley Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year. The third-year varsity starter repeated as Foothill League Player of the Year. He also was selected first-team All-Southern Section Div. II. Valaika netted 68 goals in his last two seasons. Not bad for someone who considers soccer a hobby. He is headed to UC Santa Barbara on a baseball scholarship, making this likely his final season of organized soccer. Valaika led Hart (22-3-1) to an undefeated Foothill League season. – Heather Gripplast_img
