This holiday, the film will conclude the sequel trilogy that began with 2015’s The Force Awakens and got even better with 2017’s The Last Jedi. Director J.J. Abrams returns to conclude this entire nine-film Skywalker Saga. But after the saga is concluded, don’t get your hopes up for any new Star Wars movies any time soon. In a story on Bloomberg, Disney CEO Bob Iger said the film franchise is going on a “hiatus” following the release of Episode IX.You can see Disney’s reasoning for this. While these new core Star Wars films have all done very well financially, the ambitious slate of spin-off movies have been more hit and miss. Rogue One made a billion dollars but Solo definitely didn’t. And several other films from directors like Rian Johnson, James Mangold, Josh Trank, and the Game of Thrones guys never even came out, becoming stalled in pre-production.There’s also the realization that maybe people don’t want to see a new Star Wars movie every single year. Maybe it turns the franchise into a tiring routine instead of a special event. Children, the key Star Wars audience, seem to agree since toy sales are apparently down. So take a break and make Star Wars actually exciting again when it returns to theaters. And we can’t forget that Disney is also moving a lot of resources to its upcoming streaming TV service Disney+. The platform is already getting multiple Star Wars shows, a Clone Wars revival and two live-action series centering around Mandalorians and Cassian Andor from Rogue One, respectively. So why not turn spin-off movies with so-so box office potential like an Obi-Wan prequel into prestige TV to drive up streaming subscribers?Star Wars will never go away forever. But a temporary absence will definitely make my heart grow fonder.
