Darren Henfield said Tuesday.Minister Henfield introduced to the Conference the agenda item on Tourism and other issues discussed by Heads of Government on Day Two, which included Air Transportation Issues and Blacklisting and Derisking.Minister Henfield, who took over the Chair as Head of Delegation for The Bahamas following Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis’ departure for New Providence Monday night, said Prime Minister Minnis’ position as the Head of Government of the Caribbean Community responsible for tourism, also carried tremendous significance.“It is important that the Prime Minister is playing a role in the quasi-Cabinet, responsible for Tourism,” Minister Henfield said.Citing the Minnis Administration’s decision to assist Dominica in the aftermath of hurricane devastation last year, the Foreign Affairs Minister said The Bahamas’ ability to respond to natural disasters such as the one in Dominica improves the country’s position regionally.“We have a very good Defence Force and utilities to be able to respond in times of natural disaster and I think that always improves your influence and the way the other countries look at you,” Minister Henfield said.“We sent the HMBS Lawrence Major to Dominica with Defence Force personnel onboard. We had medical doctors on board; we also had firefighters from the Royal Bahamas Police Force onboard to assist Dominica during their time of need.“When you put your money where your mouth is in responding, (countries tend to look up to you.) Now raising the issue of money, you know it is tight all across the region, but you do what you can to assist where you can. In fact, that is the very nature of this body of states called CARICOM and the Caribbean Community, to be responsive to each other’s needs.”Minister Henfield and Minister of Tourism and Aviation, the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, both addressed Tuesday’s Plenary Session on Tourism. Mr. Henfield delivered The Bahamas’ Opening Statement while Mr. D’Aguilar made a PowerPoint Presentation.“The Paper was very well received this morning. The technocrats from the Caribbean Tourism Office (CTO) and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) were here and the presentation was very well received; they were all asking for it and we intend to lay it on the table here and give it to them,” Minister Henfield said.“We also intend to send out the presentation in which everybody is raving about the commercial that was shown here this morning encapsulating the entire Caribbean region and what it offers, and so I think we are on the right path.”By: Matt Maura (BIS)Photo Caption: The Hon Darren Henfield, Minister of Foreign Affairs, leads The Bahamas’ Delegation on the second day of the 29th Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of the Caribbean Community in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on 27 February. Manager Santiago Solari revealed what he told Vinicius after he scored the goal against Real Valladolid, he also gave his impressions of the win. After so much pressure had mounted against Real Madrid in the last few weeks, the Spanish squad really needed a victory like the one they got today under interim manager Santiago Solari as his decision to use Vinicius paid off. Throughout the whole match, the Argentine manager was able to write down the many concepts that he needs to improve for the next match against Viktoria Plzen and he also took note of the players who are not going through the best moment of the season. The one that especially worried Santi was Gareth Bale, the Welshman left eh pitch of the Bernabeu in the middle of a thunderous jeer because he doesn’t seem to be making the effort from other seasons.Amongst all the players who struggled to find their best form, there was Vinicius who could lift up the spirit of his teammates right after he got on the pitch and didn’t take long to create the first goal at the Bernabeu. After he went to celebrate the goal with Solari on the sideline, we could see the manager shouting instructions to a player who was happy for his moment.👊 That winning feeling!#RMLiga | #HalaMadrid pic.twitter.com/ur3BGMYO1Y— Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) November 3, 2018After the match, Santiago Solari spoke with the media about Vinicius and many more topics, but the press was a lot more interested in the Brazilian and his performance. When Santiago was questioned about the instructions he gave Vinicius after the first goal, the manager revealed what he said.“I asked him to be more daring on the attack, I asked him to go after the defenders in a one vs one situation, I asked him to dribble and to not be afraid which is something he already does anyway,” said Solari on the Real Madrid website.“But most importantly, I asked him to defend more, which is something that he needs to improve.”“The football players or the people who are inside this world of football cannot fight with what happens outside of the pitch, we can’t change the mind of the media.”“I love the people getting hopeful for players like Vinicius, who is still 18 and has his whole career in front of him.”“All the analysis about him will need to get made 20 years from now, once he’s finished his career.”Fati and Suarez shine against Valencia at Camp Nou Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 15, 2019 With a mesmerizing first half from Ansu Fati and a brace from Luis Suarez in the second half, Barcelona demolished Valencia at Camp Nou.Valencia…“For now, Vinicius is one more element from the squad, who has his obvious virtues and his defects as well. But let’s all remember that he is still an 18-year old lad, please,” he added.🏁 FT: @RealMadrid 2-0 @realvalladolid (Kiko Olivas (og) 83′, @SergioRamos 88′ (p)).#Emirates | #RMLiga pic.twitter.com/KKsvc6gWk4— Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) November 3, 2018When asked about the result of the game and what he thought can be improved, Santiago Solari was mostly happy because the squad was able to get the three points. However, Santi understands football differently and he confessed that he would’ve loved to win the game by many more goals but he understands that football doesn’t work like that.“You can’t always win by a large margin during the most delicate moments. This has been a very challenging test for us against a very difficult opponent, they took this match very seriously and were always very close together which is always harmful to us,” continued Solari.“I would like to congratulate the lads because they played a very serious game, very strict. Games with results like this are always like that.”“This is what football is all about, very visceral, emotional, it relies a lot on self-confidence from the players.”“The whole dynamic changed after the first goal and the hormones flowed inside the pitch after that. Scoring the first goal was very important, as it was also important to keep a clean sheet.”“Valladolid is a very tough opponent, they hadn’t lost in the last seven matches. This is a very serious squad and they can hurt you when you leave them space to do it. We needed these three points.”2We need to keep calm, we can’t surrender and we need to stay organized in order to create a balance but I think we could pull it off. I’m very well actually, I have been in this situation before as a player, I am already used to the stadium,” he concluded.🎙💬 Santiago Solari takes charge of @realmadrid in a LaLiga match for the first time tomorrow! $210 at Best Buy Culture,I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that stores are turning Labor Day into an excuse to sell stuff. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Google Express is having a big sale as well, one that includes deals on game consoles, AirPods, iPhones, laptops and more.Below I’ve rounded up a handful of individual items I consider to be the cream of the crop, followed by a handy reference guide to other Labor Day sales. ‘Cannon Busters’ Is The Black Anime We’ve Been Waiting…Casio G-SHOCK Unveils ‘Akira’-Inspired ‘Neo Tokyo̵… Stay on target I’m a huge weeb. I mean, I’m wearing ninja tabi socks and eating microwave gyu-don with Gundam chopsticks right now (and they’re comfortable, delicious, and rad, in that order). I’m also a New Yorker, and while I didn’t grow up here as a transplant I’m capable of unreasonable and obsessive city jingoism to rival a Bostonian’s. Which means I’m either the ideal or absolute worst audience for Neo Yokio. It’s a Netflix original anime of which I’m still trying to fully understand its existence. It’s also the reason your Twitter timeline has shown scattered Toblerone jokes for the last week.Seriously, my threshold for cringey anime is pretty high, but I had to pause Neo Yokio just 40 seconds in after hearing the phrase “Bronx Prefecture.” I simultaneously tapped out and decided I was all-in.What is This, and Why Does it Exist?Neo Yokio is about a young exorcist in a heavily Japanicized alternate New York City who navigates high society while fighting demons. Sounds silly in reality, but for anime it actually sounds pretty tame. Neo Yokio is also the project of Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig, and stars Jaden Smith. They’re people who exist in reality, but in the context of anime are entirely baffling. Ultimately, however, Neo Yokio is simply a glorious failure.Neo Yokio is, at heart, a fantasy-comedy anime. I laughed super-hard at it. Those two facts are largely unrelated. Usually, failed comedy is the worst possible thing, because unlike failed drama it can’t even fall back on making you laugh from the absurdity when the absurdity itself is what fails. Neo Yokio manages to be weirdly, cringingly hilarious while being completely unsuccessful at the comedy it attempts. All of the intended humor comes from the heavily upper-class premise of the show. The main character Kaz is a “Neo-riche magistocrat” and a prominent figure in high society, so he and everyone around him obsesses with fashion and social standing. It’s a solid premise that’s been played with in everything from Archer to The Big O to Keeping Up Appearances. It also parallels the sports anime trope where the thing that the anime is about is, in that world, the most important thing there is. Fashion is a big thing in Neo Yokio’s premise, so it’s the only thing in Neo Yokio.Failing at ComedyNone of that pays off as intended, because Neo Yokio completely botches the two most important aspects of comedy: timing and delivery. When absurd statements about the importance of fashion are made, they almost never get any beats to hit as the jokes they’re meant to be. There’s no moment to laugh at the absurdity, because the conversation keeps going at a completely unbroken pace. The humor, as written, would be hard enough for talented voice actors to bring out because of how it’s timed. There’s a reason a lot of anime series share voice actors between them. That’s because people like Laura Bailey, Johnny Yong Bosch, Steve Blum, Monica Rial, and Yuri Lowenthal are very good at bringing personality and energy to roles using only their voices. You can joke about how Steve Blum has been in every animated work since Akira, but you also have to admit that Cowboy Bebop and The Big O wouldn’t have been the same without him.Instead of talented voice actors, Neo Yokio stars Jaden Smith, doing his best Yuri-Lowenthal-on-quaaludes impression. His delivery isn’t simply flat, it’s flat in its flatness. It’s hyperflat. Gigaflat. Tengen Toppa flat. Deadpan comedy can work incredibly well, but it needs just the right hints of inflection, and to be combined with proper timing, to pay off. This doesn’t mean Smith’s a bad actor, just a bad voice actor. Because those are two surprisingly different things that have very different requirements. In fact, none of the main cast is primarily a voice actor. Smith is joined by Jude Law as his Gundam-looking personal robot butler Charles, Susan Sarandon is his stern Aunt Agatha, his best friends Lexy and Gottlieb are played by Vice/MTV/YouTube celebrities Desus and Mero, and the fashion blogger Helena is played by actual fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson. The result of this cast is a bunch of characters who sound vaguely like people, but nothing like the people they’re being animated as. The performances range from dull monotone to absurdly broad accented strokes, with no inflection or energy behind it to breathe life into any character. And when the flattest delivery is coming from the start, who has the most screentime, you get a weirdly dull, unengaging experience no matter how interesting the setting is or how many amusing points might be buried in the writing. Let’s call this the Valerian effect. The art makes it even weirder. The show was produced by Production I.G., and generally looks like a pretty basic, frankly low-budget shonen anime. Simple but largely clean character designs that lean heavily on the generic side, with decent background animation and detail to avoid looking really cheap. For the most part.Woke? Comatose. Then there’s Aunt Agatha, Lexy, Gottlieb, and a handful of other characters with Western facial features that don’t match Kaz’s design. If anything, they look like background characters from The Boondocks. Which, combined with the subject matter, makes the entire series feel like it’s constantly setting up for a Boondocks-style social commentary joke but never actually hitting it. And around episode four their failure in trying to deliver that style of joke results in a few of the most uncomfortably out-of-nowhere and utterly failed attempts at showing social awareness I’ve seen (which only get steamrolled by the bizarre timing and terrible voice acting). It’s so strange to see a show that’s clearly some sort of passion project, but half-asses so many of its aspects while pouring money into others. Big-name, expensive, ultimately terrible cast. Passable animation. Some kind of message that just isn’t there, or at least isn’t expressed in a way for normal humans to really comprehend. The real killer here, which brings all the cringey writing, terrible delivery, and slightly janky art together into an utterly perplexing mess I really want to call so-bad-it’s-good, is the utter structural flaw of the show’s comedy: the complete lack of an audience surrogate. Neo Yokio puts you in a setting that’s both familiar-but-unrealistic with the Japanicized New York City and the supernatural elements, and unrelatable-but-realistic with the high society obsessions over fashion and social standing. No matter how you look at the world, at least some part of it is going to be fundamentally strange and alien. And that lack of anything that’s consistently relatable means none of the jokes land anywhere remotely near you. That constant barrage of weirdness can be salvaged with good comedic timing and expert delivery, but such things are apparently banned in Neo Yokio. The best way to ground fantastical settings is by including an audience surrogate, a character or set of characters who provide a familiar set of sensibilities to naturally play off of the unfamiliar situations. You need someone to look at all the weird crap that’s happening and say “Hey, this is weird crap!” And even if the rest of the world looks at them like they’re completely crazy, you at least have that tiny sliver of relatability the audience can latch onto.Archer: Terrible Anime EditionAs strange as it sounds, the best and most direct example of how to do this right is with Archer. No single character in Archer is quite normal, and every member of the cast has at least some crippling personality flaw. But each of those flaws is recognized by the other characters, so at least someone in the scene is able to call out how absurd any reactions that come from those flaws are. Everyone thinks Kreiger is crazy except Kreiger. Everyone thinks Cyril is pathetic is except Cyril. Everyone thinks Mallory is awful except Mallory. The crazy in each character is balanced with normality from the rest of the characters.Sterling Archer in Archer, in fact, is simply a far better executed version of Kaz in Neo Yokio. Both are fashion-conscious, narcissistic socialites with obsessive attention to the details of personal style and begrudgingly demonstrate expertise at their work despite constant embarrassing failures, spurred on by emotionally distant family matriarchs demanding they earn their lifestyle. The difference is that, when they freeze and obsess over absurd fashion minutiae, Archer’s coworkers look at him like he’s insane while all of Neo Yokio steps right in line with Kaz’s own priorities. I mean, both shows even take place in alternate histories where the Soviet Union still exists. The parallels are weirdly extensive.Well, that difference, and the fact that Jon Benjamin is a stellar voice actor and Jaden Smith, well, isn’t. And that Archer’s cast is full of other excellent voice actors and Neo Yokio’s cast has A-list celebrities, YouTube personalities, and fashion figures. And that Archer’s writing is extremely aware of the personal flaws in its cast. The humorously discordant aspects of its world and uses reaction and timing to highlight that recognition while Neo Yokio seems to play everything completely straight with the humor of its setting.Basically, watch Archer instead of Neo Yokio. But also watch Neo Yokio, because it’s so bad as to be strangely hypnotic. Its existence is perplexing. Its terribleness is amazing. I think I love it, or at least love hating it. It’s anime that lands in that strange so-bad-it’s-good niche as Birdemic and The Room. And it’s on Netflix, so check it out.Neo Yokio is one of the first anime series I’ve seen that really triggers the smell-this reaction. You know, where you smell something really bad and your first instinct is to make your friends smell it, both for that shared experience and because seeing their reaction is hilarious. The fact that it exists and you can inflict it on other people is a far better joke than any of the intended humor in the show itself.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
