Arunima SinhaAmid the outpouring of sympathy and financial aid for injured national volleyball and football player Arunima Sinha, generous amounts of which were doled out to score political brownie points, a crucial aspect was bypassed – the quality of medical attention being delivered to her.The 23-year-old athlete, who lost her left leg after being pushed off a moving train by goons, underwent a second surgery at Lucknow’s Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) on Sunday owing to an infection in the amputated limb. She was shifted from Bareilly District Hospital on Saturday noon after developing multiple complications.Apart from the swelling and infection, Arunima’s haemoglobin level had plummeted because of excessive bleeding. This necessitated an emergency blood transfusion on Saturday night. She has been given two bottles of blood since she was admitted to the Lucknow hospital.Officially, her condition continued to be serious but stable. Earlier, however, CSMMU chief medical superintendent Prof SN Shankhwar said a team of doctors decided to re-perate the athlete’s left leg to save her life. The doctors revealed that she had undergone debridement under general anesthesia. Debridement surgery is done to help wounds heal quickly. She was also found to have suffered multiple fractures on her right leg.Shankhwar said she had been admitted under Prof Vineet Sharma and Dr Santosh Kumar of the department of orthopaedic surgery. Her case was that of traumatic below- knee amputation on the left leg with compound fracture on the right leg.No wonder Arunima’s mother Gyanbala had a sinking feeling when she saw her at CSMMU. “I was horrified by what I saw when the doctors were cleaning the wounds on her amputated left leg. It was rotten up to her knee. There was moist dead tissue around the area. That portion of her limb has become numb. I am a health supervisor in Ambedkar Nagar and realised that the situation is serious,” Gyanbala said, recounting her brief meeting with her daughter who was in agony.advertisementThe medical teams treating Arunima inexplicably kept her family members in the dark. “I fail to understand why the doctors are not telling me the actual condition of my daughter. Late on Friday night, all of a sudden I was told by the Bareilly doctors that she would have to be shifted to CSMMU’s Trauma Centre at Lucknow. Although they were very supportive, they didn’t tell me what the problem was. I also overheard some doctors saying that she should be shifted to a Delhi hospital,” a worried Gyanbala said.”The authorities took five days to shift her from Bareilly to Lucknow. It is only five days after the incident that we have come to know that she has fractured her right leg as well,” she added.”While we are receiving help from all quarters, I’m just hoping that my daughter survives this ordeal. I want people to pray for her recovery. The Railways and CISF have agreed to give her a job. The Union sports ministry, UP government, Samajwadi Party, two cricket players and many individuals have extended their support to us,” she said.Arunima’s elder sister Lakshmi Sinha said: “The attention of the entire nation is fixed on her. We believe the doctors would have saved her leg if she was directly brought to Lucknow. But this is not the time for levelling allegations.”Divulging details of the treatment, Shankhwar said: “The left leg stump wound was full of slough and necrotic tissue. All superficial debris was removed. The patient was then planned for debridement under general anesthesia after her haemoglobin built up. She is currently admitted in the high dependency ward of the Trauma Centre.”For his part, Bareilly District Hospital medical superintendent Dr Vijay Yadav said: “We did our best and recommended that she be shifted to Lucknow as soon as we saw some improvement in her health. A doctor and a pharmacist here even donated blood for Arunima.”At Lucknow, Prof. Abbas Ali Mehdi, who is in charge of the Trauma Centre, said: “The hospital authorities have decided to treat her free of cost. We are giving her the best possible medical care.” The doctors also said that two CISF jawans, Ram Pal and Thakur Das, had given their blood for Arunima on Saturday. The victim and her family have indeed been flooded with offers of help. In the latest such case, the IIIT, Allahabad, announced that it would give her a highly advanced artificial limb free of cost. IIIT director M. D. Tiwari said: “We have developed an artificial leg which would even enable her to run as fast as she used to. We want her to resume playing.”advertisementEarlier, cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh offered her Rs 1 lakh each in aid. Union sports minister Ajay Maken also announced a medical compensation of Rs 2 lakh and an immediate ex gratia of Rs 25,000 for her.Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati said Arunima would be given financial assistance to the tune of Rs 1 lakh by her government.Apart from this, Arunima has been offered jobs by the Railways and CRPF. The internationally acclaimed artificial limbs provider, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, also volunteered to equip her with the Jaipur Foot free of cost.Meanwhile, even after a lapse of five days, the GRP has failed to identify the miscreants who had thrown Arunima out of the train.Additional director general of Railways AK Jain had said the culprits would be nabbed with the help of sketches and announced a reward of Rs 15,000 to those who would help in catching them.
Indian opener Rohit Sharma, who played a match-winning innings of 83 runs in the Asia Cup opener against Bangladesh, said T20 cricket is also about getting the basics right.Rohit was dropped by Shakib Al Hasan in the 11th over of the Indian innings but he hardly gave a chance to the rivals in the 27 balls thereafter and tonked the bowlers to every corner of the ground. Also read: Rohit, Nehra star in India’s win against Bangladesh “My key is always assessing the conditions and playing according to the requirements of the team at a given point. I try and play according to that and it is really helping me of late,” Rohit was quoted as saying by bcci.tv on Thursday.”Everything boils down to the basics. You cannot forget your basics even when you are playing T20 cricket. Sometimes you come across a pitch which is not suited for going and playing your shots and you have to bide your time and see what is happening.”The 28-year-old, who has hit a purple patch of late, said he wanted to lay a foundation for his side before changing gears in the later stages of the innings.”It is not always that easy to go about playing shots. You have to create a foundation behind you and pace your innings accordingly. That was my idea — to lay a foundation for my innings and the team. I know, once I have that foundation going, I can play my shots and switch gears. The moment I walked in to bat, I saw the pitch and realised that it wasn’t a 160 kind of a pitch. The idea initially was to get to 140-150, and we knew that we will end up getting more than that if we were thinking about that target,” he said. Also read: Dhoni in awe of fearless Pandya advertisementRohit was ably supported by veteran all rounder Yuvraj Singh and newcomer Hardik Pandya with whom he shared two half-ton partnerships.”Those were two crucial partnerships. We lost three wickets in a hurry and it was important for us to get going and keep the game moving forward. The half-century stand that me and Yuvraj Singh got was also important at that stage. A wicket at that stage would have pushed us down in the game and it would have been really difficult to get back after that. Credit to Yuvraj Singh as well, to come and bat the way he did. Hardik too changed the momentum of the game completely when he walked into bat,” the Mumbai batsman said.India cruised to a 45-run victory and Rohit is pleased that they could start the tournament on a winning note.”It is always important to start the tournament on a fresh and positive note. I am glad that I was able to put up that performance for the team and we could achieve that win. It was an important win because Bangladesh can be dangerous. The way they have played in the past, you never know what is coming from them,” he said.Speaking about his form, Rohit said, “I don’t want to look back too much on my form. I just want to carry it to every tournament I play.””I am not harping on what has happened in the past, I want to look forward. We did pretty well in the T20Is against Australia and Sri Lanka, but for me, it is important that I look forward and not think too much about what has happened before. I am a very positive person and someone who looks as to what is coming next. Pakistan is next and I am looking forward to it.”
Man Utd keeper De Gea defends inconsistent form: The odd mistake?by Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has defended his inconsistent form.De Gea came in for some criticism last season, but the goalkeeper – who’s just signed a new contract – says he was happy with his performances. He told Sky Sports: “I think people, when they look back on last season, they are thinking about the last few months.“If you focus on the season as a whole and, in particular, the first seven months of that season I was quite happy with my form.”“You can say the contract is there in the background – it’s not even in the back of your mind – that’s put to one side. The day-to-day training, going out on the pitch, that’s what you’re focusing on – and helping the team, of course.“Talking about the odd mistake, form can come and go with any player, but you are more under the microscope when you’re a goalkeeper. It’s not easy to keep up very high standards.“I’ve been here for a number of years now and to be on top form all the time it’s tough. There are moments when you feel better in yourself form-wise and moments where you’re not quite so good. Mistakes happen, goalkeeper’s live with them and I’m no different.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Arizona Cardinals’ Levi Brown, 29, is leaving the team for the Pittsburgh Steelers according to The Associated Press. An anonymous source with knowledge of the deal says Brown is being traded for a conditional draft pick. Once Brown passes a physical, the deal should be final.Brown was the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Cardinals, but failed to live up to expectations. After being moved to different positions; missing all of 2012 season with a torn tricep; and giving up three sacks in their season opener, head coach Bruce Arians lost all faith in the big man.The Associated Press reports that he will be replaced by Bradley Sowell, claimed off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 1. Ohio State redshirt junior forward Makayla Waterman (24) looks to pass to a teammate in the fourth quarter of the Buckeyes’ semifinal game against Rutgers on March 2 at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Ohio State beat Rutgers 82-57. Credit: Alyssia Graves | Assistant Sports DirectorThe Ohio State women’s basketball team starts its regular season with a matchup against No. 22 South Florida on Tuesday in the Schottenstein Center, the first of six preseason ranked Top 25 matchups. The Buckeyes, who come into the season unranked, have a lot to prove after losing over 90 percent of their scoring output from last year with the departures of guard Kelsey Mitchell, forward Stephanie Mavunga and guard Linnae Harper, among others. Finding a new reliable scoring threat will be one of many things the new-look Buckeyes hope to figure out as the season progresses, with Tuesday’s opener as the first official test of a fresh roster. Head coach Kevin McGuff acknowledges there are questions that need answers in regard to the new team, but said he sees it as an opportunity for more players to get involved to help the team win.“We’re still just kind of trying to gel and get things to come together, but we’re going to have to be a really balanced team and we don’t have necessarily that one player that can just go get points,” McGuff said. “We’re going to have to execute well and spread the ball around.” The Buckeyes were able to spread the ball around during their preseason win over IUP Sunday with a 72-50 victory that saw four separate players score double digits: freshman forward Dorka Juhasz, 14, redshirt senior guard Carly Santoro, 14, freshman guard Janai Crooms, 12 and freshman forward Aaliyah Patty, 12. A healthy dose of freshman scoring is a good sign for the young team still trying to find its identity. While Ohio State wasn’t entirely consistent all the way through, the young players made their mark on both sides of the ball, with two big steals and a block from Crooms in the second quarter that began to take the life out of IUP. There was also a mixture of older help with the scoring outbreak from Santoro, who hit three 3-pointers within three minutes in the third quarter to keep the momentum in favor of Ohio State. The most ideal situation, McGuff said, is to get all players contributing to the team and ready to make an impact for the best chance at winning, which he saw glimpses of against IUP.Getting another chance to breed chemistry will do the team some good as the season progresses. Santoro believes the team is beginning to work well together. “I think we’re gelling really well,” Santoro said. “We’re friends outside of basketball, and basketball we all work really well together. We all want the best for each other.” This theory will be put to the test against USF, which found itself making an early exit in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season to an upset against No. 11 Buffalo. Shortly after the battle against USF, the Buckeyes will face Detroit Mercy Nov. 9 at home, followed by a trip to Storrs, Connecticut, to face off against t No. 2 UConn, which has gone to 11 straight Final Fours and has won six of them, on Nov. 11. The tests of the season begin heavy with two of the first three matchups against highly-ranked opponents, so the fresh-faced Buckeyes will have to learn fast and work together to show what they are made of.

Claudio Ranieri does not lack the motivation when it comes to playing Manchester United as he bids to end their unbeaten run.The Red Devils have not lost any of their 10 matches since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became Mourinho’s interim successor in December. The Norwegian has received plaudits for his style of play which has seen United back in contention for a Champions League position just two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea. In contrast, Saturday’s opponent Fulham are in a relegation battle and have won only once in their last five league games, but Ranieri fancies his side’s chances.“We must be positive and have to fight,” Ranieri told reporters. “If we don’t fight and lose, you lose before you play.“It’s not tragedy, it’s football. Fireworks explode over the city during New Year celebrations in Yangon on 1 January 2019. Photo: AFPMyanmar police have clashed with insurgents in the troubled western state of Rakhine, state-run media said on Wednesday, as intensified fighting continued between the security forces and an armed group representing the Buddhist Rakhine ethnic group. The United Nations said about 2,500 people had been driven from their homes since early December when clashes broke out with the Arakan Army, one of several groups fighting Myanmar’s army that want more autonomy for ethnic minorities. The Myanmar military last month announced a four-month halt in fighting in the north and northeast of the country in order to kick-start stalled peace talks with the armed groups.Rakhine, in the west, was excluded from the pause, stoking doubts about the military’s willingness to bring an end to all the country’s conflicts.Rakhine was where the military launched a campaign in 2017 that has driven more than 730,000 Rohingya Muslims into bordering Bangladesh. Recent fighting has involved the Arakan Army, which claims to represent the Rakhine, the Buddhist ethnic group who make up the majority in the state of the same name. The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said one policeman was critically injured when border guard police were attacked by about 30 men carrying “small and heavy arms” on Tuesday near Saytaung, a village in the Buthidaung area.Khine Thu Kha, a spokesman for the Arakan Army, denied that the group attacked the police, but said the group did clash with government security forces in Saytaung on Tuesday.Hundreds of border guard police had been deployed in areas far from the border with Bangladesh as part of a broader military offensive against the group, Khine Thu Kha told Reuters on Wednesday.“Today the fighting started at 8 a.m.” in another location, he said.Major General Tun Tun Nyi, a military spokesman, declined to comment. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Monday that 1,500 people were newly displaced by fighting last week in Rakhine, in addition to about 1,000 people displaced since clashes broke out on 8 December.Authorities, along with local and foreign aid groups, were providing aid to the displaced, the UN agency said in an update.
