Dodgers to trade Matt Kemp to Padres for Yasmani Grandal, pitching prospects

by ,

first_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error He finished the 2014 season with a .287 batting average, .346 on-base percentage and .506 slugging percentage, close to his career averages of .292/.349/.495.Kemp also found a home for himself in right field after struggling in center and left. That forced the Dodgers to move Yasiel Puig — a standout defensive right fielder — to center, where he was blocking top prospect Joc Pederson. The trade of Kemp certainly clarifies the direction of the Dodgers’ roster. Pederson can now play center field, perhaps with Andre Ethier or Chris Heisey manning the position until Pederson is ready to take over. The rookie had only four hits in 28 at-bats during a September call-up.Puig can now return to right field. Carl Crawford, whom the Dodgers have also dangled in trade talks, can stay in left. The Dodgers could also wind up trading Ethier, in whom multiple teams have expressed interest.Of the three players the Dodgers got for Kemp, Grandal is the most intriguing and also the most established. The left-handed hitting catcher has a .245/.350/.412 slash line in 216 major league games, all with the Padres.Grandal had a 143 OPS-plus as a rookie in 2012, then was suspended 50 games for testosterone use. His OPS-plus since returning from the suspension is 110. Grandal had surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in August but still managed to play a career-high 128 games last season. The 26-year-old from Havana, Cuba ranked 11th in the major leagues in framing pitches among catchers who received at least 1,000 pitches last season, according to StatCorner.com.Wieland, 24, missed most of the 2014 season because of arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. He also had Tommy John surgery on the elbow in 2012, which prevented him from pitching in 2013. In nine major league games, all with the Padres, Wieland has a 1-4 record and a 5.31 earned-run average.Eflin, 20, was the 33rd overall pick in the 2012 draft. He finished last season in the Single-A California League, going 10-7 with a 3.80 earned-run average for Lake Elsinore. The five-player trade isn’t the biggest by volume that the Dodgers have made at the Winter Meetings. The trade with Miami involved seven players. In the course of four transactions, 15 players will have passed through the Dodgers’ roster in less than 24 hours once the Rollins deal becomes official. But Kemp is the biggest name to move since the Meetings began, the signature trade of a new regime that had been widely anticipated for weeks. Judgment on the trade will come swiftly and often: The Dodgers are scheduled to play the Padres 16 times in 2015, beginning with their home opener April 6. From the moment Andrew Friedman became the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations in October, he was expected to trade from the team’s surplus of veteran outfielders. The Padres pushed hard on Kemp, who was the Dodgers’ most productive hitter in the second half of last season. The Padres needed a big bat to help their moribund offense and were looking to make a splash while hosting the Winter Meetings for the first time since 1985. The Dodgers were targeting a catcher to share time with A.J. Ellis and prospects to complete a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies for shortstop Jimmy Rollins. It’s unknown if Eflin, 20, is one of those prospects. The Dodgers also received prospects from the Miami Marlins on Wednesday in a trade for Dee Gordon, Dan Haren and Miguel Rojas. One of those prospects, Andrew Heaney, has already been traded to the Angels for Howie Kendrick. But the Kemp trade overshadows even Wednesday’s flurry of moves, which dramatically reshaped the Dodgers’ roster in the span of less than 12 hours.Kemp, 30, has 182 home runs in nine major league seasons, all with the Dodgers. Last season he rediscovered a power stroke that had been sapped by injuries to hit 17 home runs after the All-Star break.center_img The Dodgers continued their furious Winter Meetings trading spree Thursday by agreeing on a deal that would send star outfielder Matt Kemp to the San Diego Padres. Kemp, the Dodgers’ longest-tenured player and a fan favorite, has reportedly been informed of the trade, which has not been announced by either team because it is still pending approval from the league. Soon Kemp will be heading south along with catcher Tim Federowicz for catcher Yasmani Grandal and two young pitchers — Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin, according to multiple reports. The Dodgers are expected to pay part of Kemp’s salary to defer costs. San Diego will reportedly absorb $75 million of the $107 million remaining on Kemp’s contract, which runs through 2019. That means the Dodgers will pay the Padres an average of $6.4 million a year for the next five years.last_img read more
