Korba: Two persons died after consuming illicit country-made liquor in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Wednesday. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in Dharampur locality under Kusmunda police station area, said Rajesh Mishra, Station House Officer (SHO). As per preliminary information, Santram (28) and Suresh Kurre (26) had purchased the liquor, which was made from Mahua flowers, on Tuesday evening, he said, adding that the liquor was sold illegally in the locality. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’ The duo, both residents of Dharampur area, were found lying unconscious at a ground in the night, he said. Their relatives shifted them to district hospital where they were declared dead after examination, he added. Police have recovered an empty liquor bottle from the spot where the two were found lying, he said. The officer said the kin of Santram and Kurre have demanded an inquiry claiming the liquor was poisoned. He said the exact cause behind the deaths would be known on receipt of postmortem report. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

File PhotoThe High Court on Sunday granted six months bail to lawyer Mainul Hosein in 15 defamation cases, reports UNB.The HC bench of justice Md Rezaul Haque and justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order after hearing separate bail petitions.Lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain, counsel for Mainul, said some 23 cases-one under the Digital Security Act and 22 defamation cases–were filed against lawyer Mainul for defaming journalist Masuda Bhatti in a television talk-show.The defamation cases were filed in Kishoreganj, Bhola, Rangpur, Kurigram, Cox’s Bazar, Magura, Narail, Chattogram, Jashore, Rajshahi, Netrakona, Jhenaidah, Rajbari and Brahmanbaria districts.Mainul who was connected to a talk-show ‘Ekattor Journal’ through videoconferencing aired on Ekattor TV hosted by Mithila Farzana, made an ‘offensive comment’ against Masuda Bhatti on 16 October.During the talk-show, Masuda Bhatti asked Mainul, “You say that you’re in the Jatiya Oikya Front as a citizen of the country but in social networking sites, many people are saying that you are there as a representative of Jamaat.”Angered with the comment, Mainul said, “I’m thanking you for your audacity and I want to believe you as ‘characterless’. There’s no question about Jamaat’s link with me and what question you have asked is embarrassing for me.”

Kolkata: Marking a new chapter, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will transport container cargo belonging to food and beverage giant PepsiCo (India) from Kolkata to Varanasi on river Ganga (National Waterway-1).The country’s first container movement on inland vessel post Independence is scheduled on Tuesday October 30. Secretary (Shipping) of the union government Gopal Krishna along with Chairman, IWAI, Pravir Pandey, and other senior government officials will flag off the vessel carrying the consignment in presence of PepsiCo representatives from Kolkata. The flag off will also coincide with IWAI’s first foray into Public Private Partnership (PPP) model when IWAI will hand over the operation and management of its terminals in Kolkata to M/s Summit Alliance Port East Gateway (India) Pvt Limited (SAPEL) on a supply, operate and maintain (SOM) model. The vessel will make its return journey with fertilisers belonging to IFFCO that will be procured from its Phulpur plant near Allahabad. Container cargo transport reduces the handling cost, allows easier modal shift, reduces pilferages and damage and enables cargo owners to reduce their carbon footprints.
