No. 2 UCA Claims Spot in Southland Championship With Five-Set Win

The Sugar Bears were up 2-0, but the Islanders fought back to send the match to a full five. It was UCA’s junior middle blocker Savanah Allen who proved to be the difference maker in the last set, knocking down four kills and ending it all with a block solo on the Islanders’ senior middle blocker Madeleine Doud. Set FourTied at 19 apiece, Corpus Christi ended the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-20 and send the match to a fifth set. In that stretch, the Islanders forced five UCA attack errors, including a block assist from Madison Green and Doud to give Corpus Christi set point at 25-20. On the ensuing play, Doud claimed her team-leading fourth kill of the set for an Islanders’ attack that hit a .303 clip. ACU became the first No. 8 seed to earn a spot at the tournament final after a 3-1 win over No. 4 Houston Baptist earlier today. Allen and junior right side Samantha Anderson provided 12 kills each while sophomore outside hitter Abbie Harry recorded 11. Allen also had 16 assists for the double-double. Sophomore setter Elizabeth Armstrong earned a double-double of her own with 15 assists and 10 digs. The Sugar Bear defense ended the match with 12 blocks. The Islanders took a 24-23 advantage for their first lead since being up 17-16. Gilpin tallied two key kills in the Islanders’ final four points, including one to make it 25-24 after Anderson had delivered a block solo for the Sugar Bears to make it 24-24. Fitzsimmons and Gilpin each made three kills for an Islanders’ squad that hit just .081, their best of the match at that point. Senior outside hitter Brittany Gilpin and senior setter Kristyn Nicholson each earned double-doubles with Gilpin downing 12 kills and scooping 10 UCA attacks while Nicholson dished out 44 assists to go with her 10 digs. Set FiveA block solo from Allen ended the fifth set 15-9 for UCA to claim the fifth set and a spot in tomorrow’s championship. The score was tied four times in the first 10 points given when the Sugar Bears broke out on a 10-4 run to end the set after the teams were tied at five apiece.
